The “Jean Monnet European Module: The European Union as a global player for Democracy and Fundamental Rights” aims to promote knowledge about the European Union from a legal perspective for a target audience made up of law graduates from Brazilian universities who are interested in pursuing post-graduate studies in Portugal. Fundamental rights are violated daily, with democracy often called into question. This module, therefore, can be useful both for those who are less familiar with them as well as for those who already know what is at stake, addressing how they can be protected, how to avoid violations, and what public policies should be developed in this regard.Teaching activities will take place in both countries: Brazil and Portugal. The course to be taught in Brazil is called “Democracy and Fundamental Rights in the European Union Law” and it will consist of 32 contact hours. It is innovative because there are no course units addressing this topic in Law undergraduate programs in Brazil. In Portugal, the Module will include one course unit from the Master’s Degree in Law, called "Community Litigation", with a lenght of 24 hours. Attendance is open, free of charge, to Brazilian university teachers with an interest in European affairs. A new course will also be created, called “European Union and its policies for Democracy and Fundamental Rights”, with 32 contact hours. In addition to the teaching activities described above, the module will promote research on Fundamental Rights in the European Union, conferences and round tables and publication of scientific papers. These events combine scientific, educational and promotional functions.”
