Law of the Sea and Sustainability: Multilevel Ocean Governance

This project investigates how sustainability is emerging as a structural principle of contemporary Law of the Sea and reshaping ocean governance across three interconnected levels: international, European, and national/regional. It takes as key turning points the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the BBNJ Agreement (19 June 2023), the ITLOS Advisory Opinion of 21 May 2024 on climate change, as well as other relevant international case law in this field, together with the emerging European Union framework on ocean governance.
