The II International Symposium on Human Rights and Citizenship is a joint initiative of Universidade Portucalense Infante D. Henrique (UPT), Portugal, and Universidade Salvador (UNIFACS), Brazil, consolidating an academic partnership that has lasted for over a decade.

For this second edition, which will take place on July 1st and 2nd, 2025, the chosen theme is “Human Rights in Crisis? Tensions between Global Challenges and Local Situations.” This theme reflects contemporary issues that challenge the protection of human rights in a world increasingly marked by growing inequalities, political crises, climate emergencies, and democratic setbacks in different regions.

Call for Abstracts

  • The call is open to interested researchers who wish to submit papers for presentation until May 30, 2025, according to the Working Groups (WGs) described below.
  • A special edition of the Revista Jurídica Portucalense – RJP (Q3 – Scopus & WoS) and/or the publication of an e-Book is planned (in addition to the electronic proceedings).

      • €60.00 for each individual communication
      • €40.00 for co-authored communication
      • €5.00 for listeners with a certificate

Thematic Working Groups

This track welcomes works that promote reflection on citizenship practices in different contexts of rights violations, with a particular focus on the role of social movements and collective actors in the defense and promotion of human rights. Additionally, the influence of Artificial Intelligence in this field will be a key area of reference.
This track includes works that analyze the challenges faced by various groups in securing their rights, with a focus on children, the LGBTQIAPN+ community, Indigenous peoples, women, Black populations, migrants, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and other minorities.
This track welcomes works that explore development from a broader perspective and its connection to human rights, addressing issues such as regional and urban development, socioeconomic disparities, access to basic services, infrastructure, employment, housing, and environmental quality. Discussions will be guided by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This track focuses on the interaction between human rights and government institutions, analyzing public policies through the lens of human rights principles and regulations. It will also examine the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of these policies and their impact on the fulfillment of citizens’ fundamental rights.

Objectives

  • Generate knowledge to support the development of public policies, ensuring publication under internationally recognized scientific dissemination standards. This aims to foster synergy between the academic world and State sectors responsible for implementing Human Rights Pact recommendations.

  • Strengthen the network of researchers dedicated to conducting research projects focused on Applied Human Rights.

  • Train researchers at various levels, addressing the challenges posed by Artificial Intelligence, with the support of academic institutions involved in the design and execution of the 1st International Symposium on Applied Human Rights, a product of the international cooperation agreement between UNIFACS and Universidade Portucalense.

  • Assess the challenges related to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), evaluating current progress and future directions.

Certificates will be issued to participants who meet the event's participation requirements.

Papers will be accepted for both in-person and online presentations. To participate, authors must submit an extended abstract within the established deadline. Travel and accommodation costs for in-person participation are the responsibility of each participant.

Yes, it is possible to submit more than one paper for evaluation. However, each paper must be submitted individually, along with its respective extended abstract, and must comply with the event’s submission guidelines.
