The project aims to strengthen the research infrastructure of the Portucalense Institute for Legal Research (IJP) to support its 2025–2029 strategic plan, enhancing interdisciplinary legal research, advanced training, international collaboration, and knowledge transfer. The proposed investments – including a Virtual Lab, AI research infrastructure, digital courtroom technologies, collaborative research equipment, and resources to reinforce the Revista Jurídica Portucalense – will provide the technological capacity required to address contemporary legal challenges at the intersection of law, artificial intelligence, sustainability, human rights, global health, and justice.

Promoting Institutions

  • Universidade Portucalense Infante D. Henrique (UPT)
  • Instituto Politécnico de Leiria (IPLeiria)
  • Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa (IPL)

Objectives

The main objective is to establish a modern, digitally enabled research environment that supports empirical and collaborative legal research across IJP’s three institutions, while reinforcing its commitment to research excellence, open science, and societal impact. The infrastructure will facilitate AI-assisted legal research, comparative legal analysis, digital justice simulations, secure data collection, preservation and digitisation of legal resources, and international collaboration through hybrid and virtual research environments.

Expected Outcomes

Expected outcomes include increased scientific excellence and international competitiveness, higher-quality research outputs, stronger interdisciplinary collaboration, enhanced doctoral and researcher training, expanded international networks, improved public engagement through open science initiatives, and greater policy and societal impact. The project will also contribute to the digital transformation of legal research and education, supporting IJP’s ambition to consolidate its position as an internationally recognised centre for innovative legal research aligned with European priorities, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence and digital justice.

Project implemented under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) – a nationally implemented program, with an execution period until 2026, which aims to implement a set of reforms and investments designed to restore sustained economic growth after the pandemic, reinforcing the objective of convergence with Europe over the next decade.
