New collective book

The Portucalense Legal Institute, in collaboration with the Leiria hub, announces the release of a new collective work: As Iniciativas dos Cidadãos como Instrumento de Democracia (“Citizen Initiatives as Instruments of Democracy”, in free translation).⠀⠀⠀⠀This publication, coordinated by Mário Simões Barata, Ângelo Abrunhosa (both from the Polytechnic of Leiria), and Dora Resende Alves (University Portucalense), also features contributions from a number of the Unit’s researchers.⠀⠀⠀⠀The work is available in open access and can be consulted through the Almedina Publisher’s catalog: https://www.almedina.net/oa-iniciativas-cidadaos

Researcher Receives Parliamentary Prize in Ukraine

Oleksii Makarenkov, a researcher at the Instituto Jurídico Portucalense (IJP), has been awarded the Verkhovna Rada Prize of Ukraine, which has been granted since 2008 to young scientists in recognition of their outstanding scientific contributions. The award was given for his work “Legal Foundations for the Institutionalization of Public Power Integrity in an Open Society,” acknowledging the impact of his research on promoting legal values and advancing Ukrainian society. This prize, which underscores the significance of Makarenkov’s work, also brings recognition to the Instituto Jurídico Portucalense, highlighting the importance of international collaboration in legal research. Makarenkov dedicated this achievement to his mentors and the institutions that shaped his academic journey, emphasizing that the award represents both an honor and a challenge to continue advancing legal knowledge for the benefit of society.

Leiria hub of the Portucalense Legal Institute hosts the launch of the collective work “The European and Inter-American Systems of Human Rights Protection: A Comparative Analysis”

On 10 December, International Human Rights Day, the José Saramago Library of the Polytechnic of Leiria hosted the public presentation of the collective work “The European and Inter-American Systems for the Protection of Human Rights: a Comparative Reading”* (free translation).⠀⠀⠀⠀The presentation was led by the former Judge of the European Court of Human Rights, Ireneu Cabral Barreto, alongside Professor Susana Almeida, Director of the IJP’s Leiria hub, and other experts. The session also featured the presence of the Director of the Portucalense Legal Institute, Prof. Maria Manuela Magalhães, alongside IJP researchers from UPT and IPLeiria.Coordinated by Susana Almeida and Andrés Rousset (Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Argentina), this work brings together the collaboration of around 60 authors from Portugal, Spain and various Latin American countries, including several contributions from IJP researchers.The publication is available in open access at the following link: Os Sistemas Europeu e Interamericano de Proteção de Direitos Humanos: uma Leitura Comparada.*This work was supported by the UIDB/04112/2020 Program Contract, funded by national funds through the FCT I.P.

International Workshop for Early Career Researchers – Bridging Disparities: Critical Innovations in Legal and Political Sciences took place on December 3

On December 3, 2024, the Portucalense Legal Institute held in a virtual format the International Workshop for Early Career Researchers – Bridging Disparities: Critical Innovations in Legal and Political Sciences. The event was organised by the Research Unit’s post-doctoral fellows, i.e. Yasmine Loza and Muhammad Khan, and brought together academics from various institutions around the world, offering a platform to explore innovative approaches to significant global issues in the legal and political sciences.The workshop’s morning session featured keynote addresses by Anthony Carty (Beijing Institute of Technology) and Maryam Qasim (Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University). The afternoon session included presentations by Maysa Ayoub (American University in Cairo), Omar S. Dahi (Hampshire College), Samer Abboud (Villanova University), and Fade Eadeh (Seattle University).Dynamic panel discussions complemented the presentations, focusing on topics such as “21st Century Trends and Debates in International Relations” and “Human Rights, Asylum/Refugees, and Surveillance”.For detailed information on the keynote speeches and papers presented, please visit the event website.

Intensive Program in Women’s, Gender, and Intersectionality Studies

Universidade Portucalense (UPT) is offering an Intensive Program in Women’s, Gender, and Intersectionality Studies, coordinated by IJP’s researcher Zamira de Assis. This initiative aligns with the global effort within the framework of the UN’s 2030 Agenda, the Council of Europe, and the European Union Council, as well as the EU Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025, which has been driving various initiatives and fostering interest in Gender Studies and Women’s Studies. This multidisciplinary and cross-sectional educational offering provides a valuable opportunity to develop skills and deepen knowledge on Legal Norms and Institutions from the perspective of diverse fields that directly or indirectly pertain to Women and Women’s Rights. It aims to offer legal support for understanding and researching reality through both legal and non-legal lenses. Registrations are open until January 10, 2025.
