Call for Abstracts | 3rd International Symposium on Human Rights and Citizenship: Causal Relationships Between Structural Inequalities and Human Rights and Citizenship Violations The Instituto Jurídico Portucalense (IJP) and Universidade Salvador (UNIFACS) invite scholars and practitioners to participate in the 3rd edition of the International Symposium on Human Rights and Citizenship, which in 2026 will focus on the theme “Structural Inequalities and Systematic Human Rights Violations.” The symposium proposes a critical and interdisciplinary approach to contemporary dynamics of social exclusion, erosion of citizenship, and democratic fragility. It aims to foster in‑depth debate on the causal relationships between structural inequalities and violations of human rights and citizenship. The event is conceived as an international scientific meeting, resulting from a well‑established academic cooperation between UNIFACS and IJP/UPT, and will bring together a wide network of universities and institutions from Latin America and Europe. Aligned with recent international academic and institutional agendas, the symposium integrates contributions from critical social theory, public policies, social justice, and sustainable development, while also addressing the impacts of new technologies, in dialogue with the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The symposium will take place on 18 and 19 June 2026, in a hybrid format (in‑person and online). Abstract submissions are open until 15 May 2026. IJP hosts the II Latin Polar Science Workshop On 16 April, the Portucalense Legal Institute (IJP) hosted the II Latin Polar Science Workshop, organised in partnership with the independent network Latin Polar Science. Held in a hybrid format, the event featured several thematic panels addressing key issues in polar science, covering topics ranging from security and geopolitical dynamics in polar regions to the impacts of climate change. These panels brought together experts from academia, diplomacy, and national and international organisations, including Hanne Brusletto, Ambassador of Norway to Portugal, representatives of the French think tank Le Cercle Polaire and the Tekever group, as well as Sherri Goodman (Secretary General of the International Military Council on Climate and Security), who presented the book “Threat Multiplier”, contributing to the discussion on global challenges related to the polar regions. During the afternoon, three sessions of paper presentations were also held, providing a dynamic space for sharing ongoing research across different thematic areas within polar science. The event reinforced interdisciplinary dialogue and international cooperation, particularly between Southern Europe and Latin America, highlighting the role of these regions in advancing scientific research on global challenges linked to the polar regions.
