IJP Hosts International Conference Marking 40 Years of European Integration
On 23 October, the Instituto Jurídico Portucalense (IJP) hosted the international conference “Justice without Borders: 40 Years of European Integration – Commemorating the European Day of Justice”, bringing together academics and legal professionals to discuss the evolution of Law and Justice in Portugal within the context of European integration.
The opening session featured a keynote address by José Luís da Cruz Vilaça, former Vice-President of the Court of Justice of the European Union, who reflected on the history, challenges and future prospects of the European project.
Throughout the day, thematic panels explored the impact of Portugal’s 40 years of membership in the European Union on its legal system and administration of justice, as well as the current instruments and challenges of judicial cooperation within the European area and opportunities for dialogue with experiences of cooperation across the Lusophone world.
The conference brought together researchers from the IJP alongside invited speakers from Portugal, Brazil and Cape Verde, fostering the exchange of perspectives and encouraging reflection through a comparative and international approach.
The initiative reinforced the IJP’s commitment to promoting academic debate, international collaboration and research on contemporary legal challenges in an increasingly interconnected world.
